Supports the mission of the department by seeking to increase diversity in its master's program. Applicants for the Altman Scholarship, who may have interests in any area of philosophy, should demonstrate how their experiences and background will promote diversity in the program. Professor Emeritus Andrew Altman taught in the Department of Philosophy from 2001 until 2019.

Supports a scholarship for an undergraduate major based on academic excellence and economic need. Preference is given to students from segments of American society whose members historically have been denied equal educational opportunity due to prejudice and discrimination.

Defrays costs incurred by faculty during the course of their departmental duties, when those costs are not covered by the normal departmental budget or other funds. Professor Emeritus David Blumenfeld taught in the Department of Philosophy from 1987 until 2006.

Awarded to academically successful philosophy majors who face financial barriers to realizing their dreams. Craigie earned her bachelor's degree in Philosophy from Georgia State in 1968.

Supports an annual award to a graduate student for excellence in teaching, selected by the faculty on the basis of teaching reviews, student evaluations, student performances and innovative course design, etc. Principal Senior Lecturer Emerita Sandra Dwyer taught at Georgia State University for more than two decades, retiring in 2020.

Provides programmatic support for the Department of Philosophy, such as student scholarships, student travel to conferences, faculty support, visiting speakers, and other expenses to further the Department's improvement. George Rainbolt joined the faculty of Georgia State University in 1993 and he was the Department of Philosophy's longest-serving chair, from 2000 to 2017.

Support for graduate students, selected by the faculty on the basis of academic excellence. Dr. Ralf F. Munster was Chair of the Department of Philosophy from 1965 to 1978.

Covers departmental expenses not covered by state funds, including student prizes, refreshments after colloquium talks, dinners for visiting departmental guests and so forth.

Awarded to an undergraduate major on the basis of overall academic excellence, including (but not limited to): program GPA, overall GPA, undergraduate research projects, B.A. thesis work and participation in academically-oriented departmental activities. Dr. Beiswanger was professor of philosophy from 1963 to 1970.
